Working with Diversity in Counselling DVD

Vignette material based on clinical casework

Images from the DVD

Aimed at trainers working with counsellors and therapists, to provide a stimulus to explore attitudes and to raise awareness of issues of diversity.

The DVD consists of six vignettes of counselling interactions, each presenting a specific theme. While the names and biographical circumstances of each client have been changed to preserve anonymity, the issues presented in each vignette are based on real case material.

  • Bernice has inner discord and confusion about her black identity.
  • Teacher Rosemary is having difficulties in coming to terms with the approach of her school's new black head teacher.
  • Following his recent promotion, Moses is experiencing racism from his work colleagues.
  • Miles is experiencing conflict between his religious beliefs and his feelings of sexual attraction to other men.
  • Raj and Meena's marriage has been in turmoil since the birth of their second child. Raj has invited his mother over from India to help in the home but Meena feels that this has just added to the difficulties.
  • Shaheen is an asylum-seeker who is traumatised by the violent loss of her husband and child.

Each vignette is around 10 minutes in length — long enough to open up the issues it depicts but short enough to be used as the basis for an effective teaching and learning session. Background information about each client, together with areas for discussion and additional reference material are enclosed with the DVD.
